Cold Water: Sweet but Disastrous

I enjoyed my childhood so well because I grew up in a rural setting, semi-urban though.

My enjoyment was knitted to so many things as a hardworking and ready-to-do-anything fatty bom bom. One of which was DRINKING COLD WATER, CRACKING ICE BLOCKS AND BATHING/SWIMMING IN COLD WATER.

Imagine returning from the farm, football pitch, etc, what one desires first would be a gulp of a cup full of cold water, especially if its from a natural refrigerator: a dogged clay pot.

SECONDARY SCHOOL DAYS

As a junior boy in Government Science School Kuru, Jos South LGA, Plateau State, Nigeria, access to hot water for any reason at all is near impossibility except if you're sick or set to use a cup of pap or "gwete" from the dining hall as an alternative. Verifiable with my classmates Arc Fentah, Charles, G Code, Samuel, John, Bapi, Malo, Zuma, Obaje, Fash, Joseph, etc….

Sometimes, we could afford to stay for 2-3days without any association with water… A preferred situation than just risking it. Sometimes, we even wear undried clothes… Kai! Plus "Soaks"…. Lol

Where we even see cold water to drink sef?

"One zobo, one fish, one bread…"

Until I became a senior student, knowing my way I had no access to hot or warm water.

I had to be admitted because of exposure to cold water. #Sad!

POST SECONDARY SCHOOL

My University days had even the worse exposure; no money to buy Kerosine, always in school very early in the morning and late into the nights, rigors of PHARMACY SCHOOL, etc.

Again, I was admitted in JUTH, this time, CHRONIC PNEUMONIA.

Since then, my mum, Ngo Talatu Bot swore never to allow me get so exposed to cold. She buys Kerosene, bought me a thick blanket, two sweaters, good trousers, etc. God bless you sweet mother!

Indeed, staying in Jos exposes one to cold beyond imagination.

MY MESSAGE

Drinking cold water and bathing with cold water remains one of the biggest hazards and a contributing factor to untimely deaths today (Chu et al, 2016).

Some of the dangers due to homeostatic changes includes:

Increased intracranial pressure due to shortage of blood supply and migraine headache.

Increased heart rate/beat due to narrowing of the blood vessels and thickening of same from fat deposits on blood passage paths.

Allergy on the skin causing itchy sensations due to undigested fats on the sebaceous lining of the skin that ordinarily hot water will melt. Poor erection in males and poor libido in females. Risk of increased infections in pubic areas and private parts.

Poor digestion of ingested food, which will impair absorption of nutrients due to thickening of the mucosal lining. Threatened immune responses. Secondary infertility. Rheumatoid Arthritis. Elevated blood sugar. Heart attack and other risks on the heart. Some forms of soft tissue cancers. ….and a lot more.

To worsen it is when you sum it up with driving and sleeping or sitting in an AIR CONDITIONED enclosure. Well, we can go on and on… WAY OUT Drink warm water always. Take your bath with warm or averagely hot water. Keep off AC/Excessive fan. God made dwindling situations (hot-cold-warm) so as to strike a balance. Artificial seeking of comfort shortens life by placing you at numerous risks. Have you wondered why you urinate frequently when you drink cold water, bath with cold water or stay in an air conditioned environment for long? Hence, feel free to sweat… Its healthy! Gracias!!
