Activities leading to the next general elections in 2019 have entered a critical phase with the commencement of live debates for candidates seeking political offices
December 14th, 2018 saw the first set of debates held for the vice presidential candidates from five parties. The parties included Alliance for New Nigeria (ANN), African Democratic Congress (ADC), Young Democratic Party (YDP), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and All Progressives Congress (APC)
The event organized by Nigeria Elections Debate Group in collaboration with Broadcasting Organization of Nigeria (BON) was hosted on Channels TV and beamed live. It was an interesting outing by the candidates. While some marshaled out ingenious roadmaps to solving present challenges, others were egregious in their fixation to blaming past administrations without a lifting a finger to fix a thing
It is understood the Presidential debates will follow suit with Presidential candidates of the aforementioned parties taking there turns.
In Plateau state, it is understood that the Plateau Debate Group (PDG) is also neck-deep in preparations for the gubernatorial debate in the state following the success of the first edition hosted by the group in 2015.
Our correspondent reports that in her bit to be scientific and fair to all parties, the PDG has subjected all the candidates in the gubernatorial elections turf to a preliminary screening phase using online voting in addition to other criteria, to trim down the number to at least four for the proposed two-hour debate which will be beamed live on television, conventional and online radio stations to the world.
The ongoing online poll has generated significant interest from all political parties and their supporters who are mobilizing and voting competitively to ensure their candidates make the cut. This no doubt is raising the political consciousness and adding to voter mobilization towards the general elections in 2019
The group said she drew inspiration from the success of the outing in 2015 where the eventual winner and incumbent governor, Simon Bako Lalong, hinted at the time that he was looking forward to participating in another debate organized by the Group
With the culture of elections debate being entrenched in our democratic system, Nigerians are excited that we are on the right path to democratic maturity
