INSPIRATION 101: MENTORS AND THE CHALLENGE OF MENTORING
Values and norms are continuously becoming endangered, facing imminent extinction. This is partly due to the near absence of pure colonies of reservoirs, compromised channels of transfers as well as lack of compatible and intact receptacles. Celebrated values in one generation become compromised at the time of transfer to the next generation. The challenge of value propagation and adaptation therefore is one that must be taken serious
Paul was determined to ensure the preservation of the integrity of building blocks of life he passed to Timothy remain hence he admonished him thus:
"What you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses, commit same to reliable men who will also be faithful to teach others".
When pearls are thrown to swine, they treat them as rags. As good as a message is, the messenger must be good enough to carry and deliver it in a way they its value will not be undermined. The first attraction to content is the container. When containers have leakages, they drain and waste valuables.
A major challenge of mentorship is that of reservoir integrity. Some mentors(reservoirs) are either contaminated or leak- plagued. A contaminated reservoir is void of pure colonies of values. Progenies and trainees from such reservoirs are deviants and variants of acceptable standards. They hatch out into the society to become miscreants and misfits. Leak-plagued mentors on the other hand are empty vessels. They have been drained of values and virtues yet they parade large army of trainees. They pump them with noise and emptiness. Their mentees are usually puffed up and inflated balloons carried about by winds and waves. They accept, believe and do everything and anything without clear cut borders.
Another challenge is trainee integrity. Paul emphasized in reliable men. The near absence of faithful and reliable men is a set back in value conservation and propagation. No one wants to learn. Everyone claims knowledge of everything. Mentees are either not willing to go the full length or have 'better' ideas than their mentors. Mentees are either self-serving or trick stars to the frustration of value transfer. It takes a loyal and faithful trainee to copy verbatim from the masters template and step it down to lower level trainees without alterations.
Again, the process of generational and value extinction is challenged by step-down channel. Mentors must engineer potent training and communication tools to be able to reach and teach their trainees. Conscious effort must be made to understand the personalities behind the persons of each trainee. When the wrong channel of transfer is adopted, the message spills away thereby breeding a generation of empty receptacles.
It takes a proven mentor, a reliable mentee, sound values and an intact channel to ensure a seamless feat of generational succession . Good morning
