MORE THAN THE NUMBERS

MORE THAN THE NUMBERS
(A birthday presentation for a beloved pastor)

Counting on and on
The embers not the numbers
Not numbers in years
But embers in the years
Not number of the years
Embers of warmth
Warmth for family and friends
Embers from timbers with fibres
You have them in numbers
Embers and timbers
More than numbers

SUNRISE AT SUNSET

SUNRISE AT SUNSET
(SC in Dr Glo's shoes who recently lost her dad)

A bend not an end
An edge with a hedge
A star in the dusk
A sun in the dawn
A light in the tunnel
Making light of the tide
Our sunrise at sunset

HURRAY, YEGETYAT IS SIX

HURRAY, YEGETYAT IS SIX!!!

Days running into years
Dreams turning into reality
A kid angling for boyhood
Awareness actively increasing
Knowledge expanding day by day
Six hearty cheers boy

Detection of canine parvovirus 2: A comparison of PCR and Haemagglutination test.. Chollom et al

Several laboratory techniques have been adopted for detection of canine parvovirus (CPV) but the big question has been on their accuracy, speed, cost and availability. This study was meant to compare conventional polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and haemagglutination (HA) test in the detection of CPV-2. PCR targeted the VP2 gene while HA targeted the haemagglutinin all in the virus. 113 samples comprising 80 rectal swabs and 33 necropsy tissues from dogs showing symptoms that were suggestive of parvovirus enteritis were collected from veterinary clinics in Jos. HA test detected the virus in 86 (76.11%) of the samples while PCR confirmed the virus in 62 (54.87%) of the total samples

Evaluation of the Conventional Versus Two Rapid Microwave Processing Techniques. Choji et al

Aims: To evaluate the quality of paraffin blocks produced using the microwave and without the use
of xylene. To evaluate the compatibility of the rapid microwave processing techniques on the
histochemistry of collagen and muscle fibre as well as nuclear, cytoplasmic and extracellular
components.
Study Design: Harvesting and fixation of tissues in 10% formalin. Grossing into triplicates,
processing using three different techniques, checking for retraction of blocks, checking the quality of
paraffin ribbon, Staining using the Masson Trichrome technique, grading of section quality and
staining characteristics.

Bacteriological Profile of Infected Surgical Sites. Chollom et al

The often-high mortality and morbidity rates of surgical site infections are the concern of most health practitioners including administrators globally. The need to know the bacterial agents responsible and their treatability to common antibiotics was the main thrust of this study. Two hundred surgical site swabs were collected from two hospitals and investigated. The swabs were cultured and organisms identified according to standard procedures. A prevalence rate of 31.5% was obtained from the surgical sites investigated. Direct gram staining gave a greater recovery rate of incriminated organisms than cultural methods. Staphylococcus aureus was the most encountered pathogen with 13.0% prevalence rate followed by Pseudomonas aeruginosa (6.5%), Proteus mirabilis (6.0%) and Klebsiella aerogenes (4.0%)

PARENTS AND PARENTING

INSPIRATION 101: PARENTS AND PARENTING

Beyond procreation, parents have the noble task of building the next generation by inculcating virtues and values in their wards. The acid test for good parenting is not in the quality of education, clothing, houses, jobs amongst others the children are able to have but the quality of character they are able to display. Well trained kids are an insurance of family heritage and a guarantee for generational perpetuity. Unfortunately, parents get either casual or distracted thereby neglecting their primary duties of character moulding

MOVING WITH TIME

INSPIRATION 101: MOVING WITH TIME

Time is a resource available to everyone at no cost. Time is in constant motion and it never passes the same road twice. The young and old, rich and poor have access to 24 hours in a day and 365 days in a year. In spite of the equal allotment of time, some appear to have more time on their hands than others just as some have more reward from their time than others. Although time comes at no cost, it can be costly when poorly managed.

THE PLACE OF THE PAST IN THE PRESENT

INSPIRATION 101: THE PLACE OF THE PAST IN THE PRESENT

When you do not know how to deal with the past, the past will definitely deal with you. When not managed, the past frustrates the present and jeopardizes the future. The past could be a chronicle of regrettable, failed experiences or a pleasant catalogue of successful endeavours. Both experiences if not well managed could undo the present and wreck the future
