I have followed posts and comments around the build up to the general elections in February and criticisms, mudslinging and hot exchanges have taken the centre stage.  I hereby draw your attention to critiques and the art of critiquing
Criticism is critical analysis, spoken or written opinion or judgement of what is wrong or bad about somebody or something. Criticisms are part of our daily life. Everyone is a critique, the degree of which may only differ.
Criticisms are good as they serve as checks to the teachable while to the proud they are a rock of offence. However, criticisms must be well sourced, well tailored and well presented to illicit the desired response. When this happens, it is called positive or constructive criticism. On the contrary, when criticisms are baseless, fictitious and defamatory, they trigger an untoward reaction which often leaves the target slain, devastated and destroyed. These are negative or destructive criticisms and the agents are referred to as professional critiques. They are never-see or never-say good about others. They will always see and say a cup is half empty and never half full.
Since we are all graded critiques, how do we go about this necessary but highly delicate path? Constructive criticism has a target. The target is ‘to seek and to save’. It seeks to draw the attention of another to a perceived wrong with the aim of correcting and redeeming same from perdition. The mission is image redemption. It often will hardly go public with negative publicity on another be it founded or unfounded. It will seek a one-on-one session with the accused even if peace broker is the offended. It knows that we are all humans laced with fallible tendencies. While Mr ‘A’ may be at error today, tomorrow may just be my turn to err. If I rescue Mr ‘A’ today, Mr ‘A’ or Mr ‘Z’ may come to my aid tomorrow.
Destructive criticism also has a mission. The mission is ‘to seek, to kill and to destroy’ whatever is left of the accused. It is out to give a dog a bad name so that it could be killed. A negative critique may go as far as concoct lies, doctor them as truth, force same through the throats of his loyalists who would not hesitate in shouting crucify him! Crucify him!! This group are delinquent to any team, group and society.
Destructive critiques can grind an organisation to a halt faster than corruption and embezzlement put together. They can send innocent citizens to prisons and early graves. They can disunite a hitherto united Plateau and Nigeria. They can spread their sentimental virus faster than the most contagious software virus
On the other hand, constructive critiques can salvage a dying institution, breathe life into the nostrils of a moribund company and quicken it to life. They are usually the unofficial image makers of anything they identify with. They are the new breed of Plateau patriots, that Nigerians and the world are looking for.
If you have not learnt the art, please do not criticize and if you must, please make it a constructive one
Plateau, home for all!!
